Details

Known Unto Them is an intimate, poetic remembrance drama exploring death, sacrifice, memory, and the enduring significance of individual lives. Through the encounter between a lost soldier and two enigmatic guardians, the play transforms the familiar symbol of the poppy into a deeply personal expression of humanity and collective remembrance.

The story begins when a young soldier arrives in a quiet, timeless space, disoriented and searching for his unit. His memories are fragmented: smoke, noise, a radio, bad coffee, his mother’s handwriting, and the perfume of the woman he loves. As he struggles to understand where he is, BROTHER, a calm and patient guardian, and SISTER, his silent twin who spends her time crocheting red flowers, gradually reveal a reality he cannot yet comprehend.

When BROTHER draws a red thread from beneath the soldier’s uniform, the boundary between life and death begins to unravel. Through the removal of his uniform, the recovery of his memories, and the eventual realization that he can no longer feel pain, the SOLDIER confronts the truth of what has happened to him.

But death is not his deepest concern. He wants to know what will become of his family, whether his friends will remember him, and whether his life will have mattered.

SISTER’s crocheted poppy becomes the answer to a question larger than the soldier himself. Through the patient transformation of a single thread into a flower, the play draws a connection between individual lives and the collective fabric of remembrance. The BROTHER’s words reveal that no single stitch creates the whole, yet the whole remains incomplete without it.

Designed for performance on Remembrance Day, Known Unto Them is intended to accompany a physical memorial or poppy installation. In its original production at the Army & Navy Memorial in Sidney, British Columbia, the audience encounters a mural of 2,026 individually crocheted poppies beneath a fighter plane statue before entering the building to see the play. When they leave, the mural remains unchanged, but its meaning has deepened through the story they have witnessed.

The play invites audiences to move beyond remembrance as ceremony and encounter it as a human responsibility: to recognize the people behind the uniforms, the families behind the names, and the individual lives that together form the history a community carries forward.

With minimal staging, restrained dialogue, symbolic physical action, and an intimate supernatural setting, Known Unto Them is designed to be accessible to community theatre groups. Its intention is to support future local productions in partnership with Royal Canadian Legion branches, allowing communities across Canada to connect the play with their own memorials, traditions, and acts of remembrance.

This is not simply a story about a soldier who dies. It is a story about the life that remains in the memories of others, the meaning carried by a single poppy, and the responsibility of the living to remember.
